Russian armor-piercing grenades being used in Iraq

Al-Qaida in Iraq has claimed responsibility for attacks using armor-piercing grenades that the U.S. military blamed for the deaths of several soldiers.

CBS News reports that the Russian-made device is light enough to be thrown by a single insurgent standing alongside a road and is equipped with a parachute so that it falls vertically on its target and can take out even armored vehicles.

U.S. commanders also told CBS News the weapons are being used more often in Baghdad and the attacks are difficult to stop because the grenades are often launched by militants disguised as civilians at the side of the road.
