Apple's iCar

iPod, iPhone and now iCar - the rumored product of Apple and Volkswagen cooperation. Too many "i" in Apple's product line-up, it's a good thing iNtel is not on the list.

The report here -- available via Google translation here -- claims that Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn recently flew to California where he sat down for a brainstorming session with Apple's Steve Jobs.

Though still in the early planning stages, the two firms reportedly plan to cooperate on the development of a new generation of Volkswagen compact cars that would include several Apple tie-ins.

Ovi by Nokia

The key that unlocks every door

Nokia just unveiled Ovi, which means "door" in Finnish. It is Nokia's next step in connecting people. It is actually their brand for their Internet services. It is their portal in offering what other network providers offer -photos, maps, music and games- all in one place, from mobile device to PC or internet.

It will officially launch in Q4, to buy more time in opening every door. lol

This will be the last release of AutoPatcher according to their site:
Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down.

We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years, it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it's the end of AutoPatcher as we know it.

There it is! Love or hate Microsoft for doing that. If you haven't heard or know what AutoPatcher is, (though they're popular MS is after them) read on. The download link is at the bottom, just in case you couldn't wait to download it. Get it while it's still there.
What’s AutoPatcher?
How many times did you have to leave your computer, after a format, to download the updates you had before it? How many times did you have to go do something else, leaving your friend's computer download the load of updates with their poor little dial-up modem? How many times have you wished for the updates to be portable from one computer to another and not require but a few mouse clicks to install?
If you're the "computer guy" of the pack, no doubt the answer to the above questions was "I've lost count"! And if you have one or two computers you should consider yourself lucky as well. Think of what would happen if you had to update ten or twenty computers daily!

Is there any way to avoid all this trouble?
Besides the updates one finds on Windows Update (which are not portable), Microsoft also issues special updates (called administrative updates or network install updates), which do not require an Internet connection present during the installation process. The user however will have to answer to a series of (for the most part identical) questions. Even this can be an annoyance since it requires the user's presence for quite some time.

The solution!
AutoPatcher is based on the functionality of these special updates, automating their installation process. This way, with only a few mouse clicks and two minutes of your time, AutoPatcher is able to continue with the installation of the items you selected. In short, AutoPatcher combines the advantage of both Windows Update (presentation and description of updates and automated installation), and the special administrative updates (portability and installation without the need of an Internet connection).

Now, you are convinced and want to download it? After all, you wouldn't read/reach this far if you're not interested.

Microsoft will roll out the beta versions of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 to selected testers as reported here.
Vista SP1 will be entering beta "in a few weeks" and will be "released to a moderate size audience". Interestingly, this audience does not include standard MSDN and Technet subscribers. The download is around 50MB for the 32-bit version. The full release is expected, the Vole sayeth, in the first quarter of 2008.

As for XP SP3, the news is rather less exciting. The full thing is scheduled, rather vaguely, for the first half of 2008. The service pack is basically a "roll up of all the hot fixes and patches including security updates, out of band releases and hotfixes".

So there you go. If you want to be "one" of the moderate size audience and desperately want to beta test the SP, subscribe to MSDN. If you're just like me - an average PC user - wait till next year. ^-^

SMS also commonly know as text messaging or simply txt, is growing in popularity, and not just with teenagers. It is very common here in the Philippines that network providers offers unlimited txting just to attract and make their userbase grow more. Cheap communication, that is SMS. And Yahoo jumps to this popularity by adding this feature in its e-mail.
Yahoo will introduce new features Monday for its popular Web-based e-mail program, including software that allows computer users to type text messages on a keyboard and send them directly to someone's cell phone.

The features will be available to users in the United States, Canada, India and the Philippines.

AMD swallowed the red pill, and that is ATI. HP acquired Compaq and VoodooPC. Dell acquired Alienware thus they're sometimes nicked as "Dellienware". Lenovo acquired the PC division of IBM. Hitachi Desktar acquired IBM's harddrive division.

Now, Taiwan's Acer will acquire the US computer maker Gateway for $710 million deal as reported here.

It will push them as the world's third largest vendor of personal computers.

AMD having trouble, in my opinion is also ready for acquisition. IBM or Samsung, are you interested? It will certainly give Intel a run for its money. :)

1TB on a Single Disc

A new disc format which is under development will blow away the existing format of today's discs when it comes to capacity. As published here by TFOT, the revolutionary new optical-storage technology can store 250,000 high-quality MP3s or more than 115 DVD-quality movies and about 40 HD movies on a single CD-size medium.

Imagine that! All the entertainment you want inside a single disc. This technology will also give headache to the recording industry. If this technology lands in the hands of the digital pirates, what do you think will happen?

The article also gives a brief history of the optical storage as well as how it works. A nice read.

AMD Corporate Training Video

Thanks to The Inquirer for pointing the link to this video on Youtube:

AMD have high hopes on Barcelona, but delaying this product causes them more harm than good. What they say as the "Core 2 Killer" is killing their stockholders too. :)
According to Reuters, Sharp claims it has developed the world's thinnest and lightest LCD TVs with enhanced picture quality, in a pre-emptive move before the release of organic light-emitting diode TVs, known for their thin displays and crisp images.

Sharp declined to comment on the price for the new model, but said it aims to start output when its newest LCD factory in Sakai, western Japan, comes online by March 2010.

By that time I guess, Samsung will announce it's own that will break Sharp's record.
Advance Micro Devices will announce the resignation of Henri Richard from his position as executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer. Losing the performance crown to Intel's Core CPU, losing revenue and now losing the head salesman. This year is not good for AMD.
Richard's loss is a very significant development in what has been a disastrous year for AMD. Its flagship product for 2007, a quad-core server chip known as Barcelona, will arrive six months later than expected after a number of technical glitches. AMD has lost a ton of money in the interim, trying to compete against Intel's quad-core chips by slashing the prices of its dual-core chips.

If the date of Richard's departure is accurate, the company will have to pull off its biggest product launch of the year, Barcelona, without its head salesman.

Flash Padlock

In the beginning the battle is on capacity, 128mb skyrocket high to 16gb. Next is design. And now, flash manufacturers focus on security.

Memory and robust USB drive manufacturer Corsair has announced a new flash drive designed to secure user data, but it doesn't use namby pamby software. Huzzah!

The new Flash Padlock, available in 1GiB and 2GiB flavours, feature a keypad on the stick itself for unlocking it prior to use. Removing the drive from a PC automatically locks the device down again.
