(The "Chrome" is Mozilla's
term for the little search box to the upper right, reachable by
control-K, for instance). For Lucid, this will definitely work for
switching between Google and Yahoo!, we don't yet know what other
providers will be in scope for Lucid. If a user has Google set as their
search provider, they will have exactly the experience they do today. If
they switch to Yahoo!, the default home page will switch to using a
Yahoo! search. If they switch back to Google, the default home page will
switch back to using the Google search, exactly like today. Searching
from Chrome will continue to work exactly as it does today.

The reason for this change is because Canonical has negotiated a revenue
sharing deal with Yahoo! and this revenue will help Canonical to provide
developers and resources to continue the open development of Ubuntu and
the Ubuntu Platform.PPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-24896517681587469972010-01-06T23:52:00.000-08:002010-01-07T00:00:30.539-08:00Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of 2009Here's the list of most downloaded movies on bittorrent for the year 2009 according to Torrentfreak site.

As you can see, Star Trek tops the list. That is, with AMD only. The Federal Trade Commission which is investigating Intel too, asks that Intel do a lot more than what's described in the AMD settlement. To cover VIA CPU's also.

Intel's compiler can produce different versions of pieces of code, with each version being optimised for a specific processor and/or instruction set (SSE2, SSE3, etc.). The system detects which CPU it's running on and chooses the optimal code path accordingly; the CPU dispatcher, as it's called.

"However, the Intel CPU dispatcher does not only check which instruction set is supported by the CPU, it also checks the vendor ID string," Fog details, "If the vendor string says 'GenuineIntel' then it uses the optimal code path. If the CPU is not from Intel then, in most cases, it will run the slowest possible version of the code, even if the CPU is fully compatible with a better version."
You can read the whole story here.PPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-42051873141210050682009-03-31T19:45:00.000-07:002009-03-31T19:49:49.280-07:00I'm just not cool enough to be a MacLaptop Hunters! It can be downloaded in 25 languages at this link starting at noon EDT on March 19. Internet Explorer 8 is easier to use, faster and offers leading-edge security features in direct response to people’s increasing concerns about online safety. A new study commissioned by Microsoft and the National Cyber Security Alliance and conducted by Harris Interactive Inc. shows that 91 percent of adults in the U.S. are concerned about online threats in the current economic climate, and 78 percent are more likely to choose a Web browser with built-in security than they were two years ago.

“Customers have made clear what they want in a Web browser — safety, speed and greater ease of use,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. “With Internet Explorer 8, we are delivering a browser that gets people to the information they need, fast, and provides protection that no other browser can match.”

In response to extensive customer research and input from tens of millions of customer sessions, Microsoft developed Internet Explorer 8 to focus on what matters most to people. The security enhancements offer protection against existing and emerging security threats online. It blocks two to four times more malware attacks than other browsers; cuts down on the time it takes to complete common tasks on the Web such as searching, mapping and sharing, including navigating 15 of the 20 top worldwide sites; and blurs the lines between the services they use daily and the browser used to access the Internet.PPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-80034083208654029292009-03-04T18:51:00.000-08:002009-03-04T19:02:54.435-08:00Thermaltake Level 10Charlie of The Inquirer took these pics at the Thermaltake booth at CeBit 2009 while the PR folks there are not looking. The Nano has just enough space for a briefcase or small bag under the hood. The engine — all two cylinders, 624cc and 33 horsepower of it — is in the back, just like the Volkswagen Beetle of old. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

Download: herePPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-11765623974441548292008-08-13T19:33:00.000-07:002008-08-13T19:47:07.156-07:00Intel Core i7The letter "i" is very popular these days. Designed by Toby Gard, she has also been featured in movies in which she was portrayed by Angelina Jolie.

Initially, designer Toby Gard focused on creating the settings for Tomb Raider and the main character was essentially an Indiana Jones clone. When this character was deemed unacceptable, Gard placed his attention on designing a new one. One factor that influenced Gard to use a female character was that he noticed his male co-workers often preferred using female characters in Virtua Fighter. The redesigned character was initially a South American woman named Laura Cruz. She eventually evolved into an English woman named Lara Croft. The DVD's will self-destruct within 48 hours after they are removed from their packaging. The DVD's look like regular discs, but they are made with a special glue that is sensitive to oxygen. Once the disc is exposed to air, a chemical reaction causes the glue to darken so the laser in the DVD player can no longer read the disc. Sealed discs can last for about one year.PPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-85016384810267942962008-07-29T00:51:00.000-07:002008-07-29T00:59:02.207-07:00Foxconn Hates LinuxA post on Phoronix caught my attention. Though I'm too busy to update my blog, I can't let this news pass. Here's what the site says:

Receiving publicity on SlashDot today is word that Foxconn refuses to support Linux. Foxconn is a large OEM motherboard manufacturer, but according to a thread on the Ubuntu Forums, they refuse to support Linux. There is a bug in one of their DSDT tables for their BIOS that's causing installation issues with Linux. The DSDT for Windows is correct, but Foxconn isn't interested in issuing a (simple) update to fix the Linux support. However, this isn't surprising to us. We've known that Foxconn does not wish to support Linux at all. Going back to 2006, Foxconn has told us at Phoronix that they aren't interested in Linux on their motherboards and they have no desire to support it. For more on motherboards under Linux, check out our motherboard reviews.
Over at Distrowatch:

A tech-savvy user at the Ubuntu Forums posted that the BIOS of his G33M-S contains different reference tables for various operating systems, and that the one for Linux "points to a badly written table that does not correspond to the board's ACPI implementation" causing "weird kernel errors, strange system freezing, no suspend or hibernate, and other problems." He goes on to say, "After looking through the disassembled BIOS for the last several hours, rebooting it, and tweaking it more, I'd say this is very intentional. I've found redundant checks to make sure it's really running on Windows, regardless what the OS tells it it is, and then of course fatal errors that will kernel panic FreeBSD or Linux, scattered all over the place."

The world is awaiting the official statement from Foxconn regarding this "sabotage".PPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-67877350001638523192008-07-13T18:15:00.000-07:002008-07-13T18:25:33.543-07:00Iran's "Photoshop Missile"A combo of pictures shows (left) a handout image released by Iranian daily Jamejam online edition on July 10, 2008, showing three missiles rising into the air while a fourth remains in the launcher on the ground during a test-firing in an undisclosed location in the Iranian desert, and (right) the same image released by the news website and public relations arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Sepah News, apparently digitally altered to replace the grounded missile and launcher with a fourth successfull
Photo: AFP

The state-run Iranian channel Al-Alam said the missiles test-fired by the Revolutionary Guards included a Shahab-3 with a one-tonne conventional warhead and a range of 2,000km.

But Fitzpatrick, a former US State Department official, said: "In terms of capability, they claimed the Shahab-3 could travel 2,000km carrying a one-tonne warhead. Not an easy thing to do for them. Their current architecture would not allow it.

Since they can't offer a tricore cpu, that market belongs to AMD alone. So to counter it, they provided a marketing promotion at Newegg. So it is 4>2>3 thing :)PPVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12539159227464685113noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445568775713089632.post-9856464975220219822008-07-06T22:12:00.000-07:002008-07-06T22:36:43.133-07:00It's Official: Firefox 3 Earns Guinness World RecordThe Firefox community is the proud new owner of a Guinness World Record — each and every one of you!
